The Ozaukee County Historical Society was established in 1960 as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.  OCHS currently owns and operates three historic properties: The Hazel Wirth Archives and Research Center in downtown Cedarburg, Stony Hill School in Fredonia and Ozaukee County Pioneer Village in Saukville.

The Hazel Wirth Archives and Research Center is located in the historic Cedarburg 1907 Interurban Depot. It houses a vast collection of family histories, church, cemetery, school, property maps and records, just to name a few. It is also the location of the business office of the Ozaukee County Historical Society.

 

In 1962, the Ozaukee County Board of Supervisors designated ten acres of Hawthorne Hills County Park for the Ozaukee County Historical Society to restore, furnish and preserve historic structures from around the area.  The Ahner House was the first such structure that was dismantled and rebuilt on this site.  Since the 1960s, numerous other buildings dating back to 1840 were added to the collection of what has grown to 24 historic structures known as the Ozaukee County Pioneer Village. It is open mid-May through October. Thousands of people come each year to step back in time when life was quieter and simpler. Whether for a quiet weekend afternoon, an educational school tour or one of the many annual events, there is much to see, learn and experience.

Stony Hill School serves as a tangible connection to the country’s flag. It is a beautiful field stone one-room school house where Bernard Cigrand taught and recognized the very first observance of Flag Day in 1885.
